ORAL MEDICINE AND RADIOLOGY

Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology is unique in that it combines Oral Medicine and Radiology. It amalgamates the fields of oral medicine, which involves the diagnosis and management of oral diseases, and oral radiology, which focuses on the use of imaging techniques to diagnose and evaluate oral conditions. This specialty bridges traditional areas of health, between medicine and dentistry as it deals with the oral manifestations of systemic diseases. From access to state-of-the-art infrastructure to over the years this department has been committed to achieve excellence in imparting professional education in the field of Oral Medicine and Radiology, research and assesses the success of its programs using the highest standards of quality, innovation and visibility.

UG PROGRAM:

The teaching program for undergraduates includes didactic lectures, demonstration of x-ray techniques and clinical discussion by the faculty. Apart from casing the essential curriculum defined by DCI, the department encourages students-

  • To make integrated seminars and projects.
  • Learning of diagnostic skills and medical management of oral diseases
  • Exhaustive hands on exposure in Diagnostic Radiology where they learn to take different radiographic views and image interpretation

At the conclusion of the course the students shall acquire skills in -diagnosing diseases, instituting various investigations, taking and interpreting intra oral radiographs, and effective communication with the patient.

PG PROGRAM:

The 3 year Post graduate program is well structured with clearly defined goals, which grooms the PGs for management of various Oro-facial pathologies and various radiographic techniques specified. The MDS program also inculcates and helps the PG students to develop-

  • The Comprehensive Research oriented program which focuses on Clinical based research and Evidence based learning methodologies.
  • PGs are trained in Intra-oral and Extra-oral Imaging techniques and also in Advanced Diagnostic techniques such as CBCT, Ultrasounds, CT and MRI

ORTHODONTICS AND DENTOFACIAL ORTHOPEDICS

The Department of Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics specializes in the correction of abnormalities of jaw and teeth through the use of various removable and fixed appliances. Treatment takes the form of pre-adjusted edgewise appliances, lingual appliances , ceramic braces, myofunctional appliances, clear aligners, surgical orthodontics and micro implant based orthodontics.

The Department has excellent facilities ranging from separate UG and PG clinics with advanced digital imaging and treatment simulation system, a first, which enables planning of complex procedures.

A combination of classroom lectures and practical experience at the clinic provides students with excellent understanding of procedures. With research being an important goal of the department, all PG and PhD students undertake research projects. The department currently has around a 1000 on-going cases covering all aspects of the specialty.

PEDIATRIC AND PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

A 3-year strategically designed preplanned academic, research and clinical curricula to become an expert in Pediatric Dentistry.

Department of Pediatric was established in 1996 with the aim of comprehensive training of undergraduate & postgraduate students to acquire knowledge & skills in order to enable them to effectively deal with the problems encountered. Pediatric and Preventive dentistry is a vital part of preventing and treating any dental issues that may arise during early childhood and hence forms one of the most important branches of dentistry. It is that branch of dentistry concerned with the dental care and treatment of children till the age of 14 years. When it comes to the health of your child's primary teeth, there is no better time than now to start practicing excellent oral hygiene. Good oral hygiene starts as early as infancy. Whether you're nursing or bottle feeding, you should begin incorporating some type of dental hygiene regimen as soon as possible. This is an important part of dental care because it prevents bacteria from continuing to grow, which may eventually lead to other dental diseases .This branch of dentistry besides diagnosing dental decay also identifies habits at an earlier stage and intercepts them immediately. This branch also deals with children with special health care needs.

The department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses .

Students are taught by academicians and practitioners with years of rich experience in the field. They are also given the chance to observe theoretical learning in application at the Rama Dental College and  Hospital. DEPARTMENT OF PROSTHODONTICS

  • The Department of Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge equips undergraduate and postgraduate students to meet the goal of competent management of patients with prosthodontic needs, arrive at a diagnosis, and plan the sequence of treatment. It provides good clinical care for patients requiring comprehensive and advanced phases of prosthodontic treatment like occlusal rehabilitation, full-mouth, rehabilitation, and implant-supported prosthesis, and extraoral/intraoral maxillofacial prosthesis.
  • Prosthodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with designing, manufacturing, and fitting artificial replacements for teeth and other parts of the mouth. It is a branch of dentistry that is mainly concerned with the cosmetic restoration of lost orofacial structures (aesthetic restoration). Maxillofacial prosthodontics is a subspecialty of prosthodontics that deals with the prosthesis of the oral and maxillofacial region. Aesthetic restoration of lost orofacial structures is done through removable and fixed prostheses.
  • Removable prostheses include removable dentures (artificial teeth) - both complete and partial sets. while fixed prostheses include bridges, crowns, and implant-supported dentures. Rigorous training and experience provide prosthodontists with a special understanding of the dynamics of the smile, the preservation of a healthy mouth, and the creation of tooth replacements.
  • The Department is the first in Asia to have CAD/CAM technology, an advanced implant clinic supporting all systems, and injection molding processing systems to produce high-quality dentures and titanium casting machines.

Prosthodontics treatment provided includes the fabrication of:

  • The department boasts of an expansive UG & PG Clinic with a separate implant section in the clinical block. In the pre-clinical block, a state of the art casting laboratory and ceramic section that churns out about 100 units per month on an average is a pride of this department. The laboratory houses equipment from the best in business and includes metal/full ceramic/ metal fused to ceramic/metal castings /metal free /best of acryliser to name a few. The preclinical students get to work in a patient simulation laboratory before working on patients.

ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY

The Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology includes final diagnosis of the disease by means of using microscopic, biochemical and other features and its correlation with clinical as well as radiological findings. This can be combined with latest advanced investigative techniques.

The Department helps various clinicians by giving confirmatory diagnosis hence it occupies a unique position in the healthcare community. A thorough knowledge of Oral Pathology and Microbiology therefore lays the foundation for accurate diagnosis which in turn lays the ground for precise treatment.

The department’s UG programme encompasses the subjects of Dental Anatomy & Histology and Oral Pathology extended over the first three years of the BDS course.

CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY AND ENDODONTICS

Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics is the branch of dentistry which deals with the treatment of caries , malformed, discolored , unesthetic, or fractured teeth, pulpal and periapical diseases and dental pain management. Our vision is to create an environment conductive for enhancement of restorative and endodontic skills.The department has set up its own high standard in patient care, education and research.

UG Program

  • Our undergraduate program in endodontics typically provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries affecting dental pulp and surrounding tissues.
  • Students learn about the latest technologies and techniques in the field, gaining hands – on experience through clinical rotations and laboratory work.
  • Students are assessed by monthly theoretical written Assignments and end posting Viva-Voce with Practical assessment.
  • In Second year, the students are exposed to various aspects of the subject theoretically and the skills of students are edged on Latest phantom heads.

DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTOLOGY

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry which deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases that affect the gingiva and supporting structures of the teeth. Thus, the mission of the Department of Periodontology is to provide excellence and innovation in education and patient care with utmost precision and compassion as well as educate them about the importance of personal oral hygiene.

The department has a well segregated section for patient reception, counselling and treatment and a completely different area dedicated to academics. It has a fully air conditioned undergraduate and postgraduate section equipped with all instruments, and materials required for comprehensive dental care of the patients. The post graduate clinic is bolstered with cutting edge facilities including micro-surgery, soft tissue LASER, electrocautery and an implant surgery unit. The department has a state of the art seminar room with all the audio-visual facilities which enhances the education experience of the students. It also has an integrated department library with a vast collection of books, student library dissertations, journals and seminars.

With this the department offers undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), dental hygienist diploma courses and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme to its students.

  3. To have exhaustive hands-on exposure in clinical diagnosis and differential diagnosis of various periodontal diseases and conditions.

PG PROGRAM:

This 3-year postgraduate program in periodontology will make skilled Periodontists, capable of diagnosing, treating, and preventing periodontal diseases. The program promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, preparing PG students to work effectively with other dental specialties and healthcare professionals for comprehensive patient care.

Undergraduate Training

The oral surgical curriculum for undergraduates is split into two parts with the trainees being exposed to basics of local anaesthesia and management of medical emergencies at the chair side in the III year and the core maxillofacial surgery in the final year of Under graduation.

Postgraduate Training

Involves the Diagnosis and treatment of

  • Dental infections, Benign and Malignant pathology, Cysts, tumors etc.
  • Congenital craniofacial malformations such as cleft lip & palate and cranial vault malformations such as craniosynostosis.
  • Soft & hard tissue trauma of oral & Maxillofacial region,
